Rail and Train

Weighing equipment for rail logistics.

When transporting goods by rail, weighing equipment can ensure safety, regulatory compliance and operational efficiency, and cost control.

As with any vehicle, it is important to ensure that trains do not exceed axel limits, or gross rail load limits. Using a rail scale, or weighing freight during loading using a floor or forklift scale, can help to ensure that rail cars are not overloaded. This is important to ensure proper weight distribution in order to prevent track damage, ensure efficient braking, and to reduce the risk of derailments.

Providing accurate weight information is often a regulatory requirement. Gathering, storing and analyzing weight data can be achieved by using sophisticated weigh indicators that link with back office systems. This set up can ensure that rail operators comply with safety regulations, as well as providing an audit trail.

Accurate weight measurements enable operators to optimize loads without overloading. Using rail scales, floor scales, or our specialist heavy-duty cargo scales, weight data can be used to calculate shipping costs accurately, ensuring that customers are billed correctly based on the weight of their shipments.

Avery Weigh-Tronix is known as a pioneer in rail weighing solutions. We offer static rail scales that can be fitted into the existing track. They weigh in much the same way as a truck scale – the train simply stops on the scale, and a weight reading is taken. With NTEP and Measurement Canada approval for static weighing, the scale is designed to be rugged and reliable, built to both AREMA and Cooper E-80 loading requirements. It has a capacity of up to 230 tons and can be as long as 52 feet, if necessary.

Our weighline solution consists of a series of in-line rail transducer sections. Fitted quickly to minimize downtime, the transducers replace existing rail sections, providing wheel, axle, bogie, wagon and complete train weights.
