Overview

Whether producing, handling, packaging or shipping, it is vital that each step of the food and beverage production process is accurately documented and accounted for. An electronic scale system can efficiently weigh and document product information, allowing manufacturers to monitor, trace and control food and beverage production —and all materials involved—from start to finish.

To optimize processes, weighing equipment can be used at every step of the food production process. From tracking incoming raw materials and inventory to measurement of ingredients, quality control and shipping finished goods. As well as efficiently gathering, documenting and storing weight information, high-accuracy scales can increase revenue in food processing applications by reducing giveaway and ensuring customer orders are accurately invoiced and managed.

Hygiene is absolutely critical in a food manufacturing environment. To comply with best practices and meet strict legislative requirements, food manufacturing scales and weighing equipment must be free from food trap areas and able to withstand heavy washdown procedures. Many of our products are made specifically with the food industry in mind. With IP69 washdown certification and NSF-approved sanitary design, you can be assured that you’re working with a partner that understands the issues that are critical to your business.

In the food processing industry, weighing equipment must be able to withstand rigorous wash-down procedures. Our checkweighing scales and bench weighing bases are designed to meet IP69K certification, which offers the highest protection against ingress of dust and high-temperature, high-pressure water.

In food production, weighing is a key factor in achieving recipe control and batch uniformity. Process weighing, using recipe control formulation software and accurate scales, is essential to quality control – ensuring that recipes adhere to predefined process requirements and avoid out-of-specification results.

Traceability is the ability to track and trace raw materials and products in the supply chain. By keeping accurate records through all stages of the food production and packaging process, food suppliers can mitigate risks to consumers and save time and money in the event of a food recall. Scales and weighing systems, combined with software systems, allow users to keep records of raw ingredients, supply chain data, quality control and labels as part of a full quality control and traceability system.

When products are sold by weight, as is often the case in the food processing industry, it is a legal requirement that weighing equipment must be verified as ‘legal for trade’ or ‘trade approved’. Many of our scales for the food industry, including truck and floor scales for goods in and logistics, and bench bases and checkweighers for use on food production lines have undergone a stringent set of tests to ensure that they are sufficiently accurate and fit for purpose.

In recent years, companies are facing increasingly stringent food safety and quality regulations. New developments in food processing have created new challenges concerning food safety and quality. As a result, international and national laws, standards and inspection processes will be subject to regular revision. In the US, three federal and two state governmental organisations control food safety: the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the State Department of Public Health, and the State Department of Agriculture. These organizations focus on the production and distribution of food, making sure all food distributed to retail stores, restaurants, and consumers is safe, without contamination from food-borne illness.

In any processing environment, increasing throughput and efficiency can have an impact on your bottom line. Our weighing scales and systems for food processing environments have been designed with speed and efficiency in mind. When paired with our range of sophisticated weight indicators, our scales can use wireless communications to transmit data to back office systems, as well as linking to bar code scanners, computers and other peripherals for integration into existing networks.

Built with the food processing industry in mind, our checkweighers come with a range of weight visuals to assist the operator, including a Under / Over / Accept traffic light system. This visual approach to the user interface removes barriers to use such as language or accessibility.

When downtime is not an option, Avery Weigh-Tronix scales are the perfect solution. When dealing with large quantities of ingredients, or shipping finished goods, reliability is key. Our floor, bench and vehicle scales are built to withstand daily use, with overload protection built-in.
