Before the installation there was a single weighbridge for both incoming and outgoing vehicles collecting stone aggregates and bituminous products from the depot. At peak times queues could stretch out onto the adjoining roads. Now there are separate weighing stations.
Comments project manager Arthur McNally: “We already use Avery Weigh-Tronix concrete weighbridges in all our Northern Ireland depots and are more than happy with their performance. The development of a single-piece option provides us with the same durability and strength while also greatly simplifying the installation.”
The new weighbridge is constructed from precast and prestressed concrete to provide a higher load bearing strength and more durable option than other concrete weighbridges. It is also factory produced and so meets traceable and rigorous quality control standards. Measuring 15 metres by 3 metres it will weigh loads of up to 50 tonnes and with proper maintenance will have an operational life of 25 years.
Its design reduces lateral movement and there is full protection against heavy braking and shock loading. This allows the six T302 analogue load cells to be mounted 800mm from the weighbridge ends for simpler cleaning, which reduces downtime due to debris blockage and allows easy access for routine inspections and maintenance.
The weighbridge only needed shallow foundations and a single crane to lower it into place. This kept installation time down and had minimal impact on a busy working quarry. Concludes McNally: “The new weighbridge has made a huge difference to the operational efficiency of the quarry. We no longer have the issue of queuing lorries and the installation itself went very smoothly.”
